Back in spring 2022, I saw a video on Douyin demonstrating a software feature — I now call it Ma Liang's magic brush. A horizontal line was drawn near the bottom of a blank canvas, "beach" was typed in, and the area below became sand while the top became sea and sky. A few quick strokes then produced a heart-shaped cloud and a blood-red setting sun. The image was strikingly realistic — sand, sea, clouds, and sun blending naturally with well-balanced colors. Without that heart-shaped cloud, had you shown me the picture directly, I would have taken it for a photograph.

At that moment, my worldview was shaken and my beliefs collapsed. I'd gotten into photography in 2019 and often watched photography videos on Bilibili — Links, Gu Jun, Da Ma Mao Ben, Photographer Tang Seng, and Mediastorm come to mind. Seeing a camera excited me; seeing beautiful photos felt like a purification of the soul. I especially loved Links's Japanese landscapes and Gu Jun's Flora_weiii portraits ("I still can't forget that woman shot with the 400mm prime"). Back then I often saw it said online that photography's endgame is the "old masters" — park grandpas with their "long guns and cannons" discussing jargon like "flange distance." I hadn't gotten there yet. Then the 2019 pandemic steered me elsewhere: programming for image processing — or, as my university course calls it, "Digital Image Processing." But that starts from another point in time.

In 2018, I first encountered C language in middle school computer class — my first taste of programming. The compiler we used was called "Aha C." I felt programming's charm right away — it could do almost anything I wanted. C syntax seemed obscure to me then, but it still planted a seed: "I want to learn programming." In 2020, the pandemic brought online classes — and a computer. About a month after my dad bought a new computer, we went to online classes from home. He'd only lent it to me at first, but later didn't want to take it back, so he let me keep it and bought another. This computer he gave me — just over 3,000 RMB — created immeasurable value for my life. At first I downloaded Aha C, wanting to write complex programs, but compilation took forever and it was extremely limited as a learning tool. So I explored online, downloaded Dev-C++, learned basic syntax from the internet, and with that simple syntax I made something that still seems unbelievable to me — Class Schedule.exe, software combining a class schedule, text encryption/decryption, and looking up the student corresponding to a student ID (since many grades were posted by student ID back then, so there was a need for it). (Briefly — during the pandemic I also got into cryptography, but real cryptography was too obscure for me then. I just wanted to figure out how to turn text into something nobody could read and send it to whoever I wanted.)

Not long after, I realized C was still too complex — Python was much simpler and could do more. About a year later, I'd become "a photographer who loves processing photos with programs." But I wasn't satisfied with editing existing images — I wanted to create images through programming. In my first year of high school, I thought about it every day for a stretch — while eating, walking, doing morning runs, in self-study. After a long time of racking my brain, I still had no reliable approach. In retrospect, I hadn't learned deeper knowledge, hadn't consulted relevant materials, and my direction was completely wrong — just daydreaming with limited programming knowledge. That was never going to solve the problem. The root cause, I think, is simply that my learning ability was too poor.

But back then, I thought creating images was impossible — that making a program create anything at all was impossible — and I believed it firmly. Until I saw that Douyin video, and, as I said, "my worldview was shaken and my beliefs collapsed." No exaggeration. That video made me fully believe that "programs can create images."

In fall 2022, chatting after class, I heard a classmate say his brother worked at a company called "Xiezuomao," researching large language models. I'd seen that website before while searching for sample essays (before ChatGPT, you had to hunt for samples online for essay inspiration), and I'd tried it. The sentences it generated were too bad to put in an essay — total garbage. But what slightly shook me was that it really did seem to be generating — or creating — sentences: the articles it wrote had never existed before! Even though I believed "programs can create images," young and naive me still thought "programs can master language" was almost impossible.

Months later, OpenAI launched ChatGPT.

I became fully convinced that "programs can have every ability." But this time, no "worldview shaken, beliefs collapsed" — by then I'd started learning stock trading. I figured AI could never replace something as uncertain as "securities trading." Maybe it'd do well, but at least I could get a piece of the pie — no way I'd be "out of a job (unemployed)" (though trading stocks full-time at home isn't really a "job," so unemployment doesn't even apply). Then the classic "Will Smith eating spaghetti" video appeared; everyone laughed, but I knew it was just AI's first step toward video generation. I also heard from a short video that "the essence of AI is statistics." I'd just finished learning about proteins in high school biology, and I felt protein structure prediction was just an especially complex but rule-governed matter — perfect for AI, this kind of "advanced statistics," to handle. Two weeks after that thought, I saw the latest video on Bilibili of Shi Yigong introducing AlphaFold. (Though I only just learned — at 20:08 Beijing time on October 25, 2026 — that AlphaFold already existed back in 2018. I'd always thought AlphaFold was released right after I first thought of AI being suited for protein prediction, around 2022–2023. I always assumed it was a coincidence.)

In winter 2023, I was still studying hard — high school material, plus stocks, futures, and algorithmic trading. Classmates asked me what the point of the college entrance exam and university was, and I said: "Honestly, I'm not studying hard for a good university expecting a good job — going to a good university for a good job is meaningless. Will AI even leave us any chance at a good job in the future? (AI won't leave us any chance at a good job.) What I hope for is to meet good people at a good university." That surprised them — maybe not just because I studied hard for something other than a high-paying job, but also because I was so pessimistic about the future job market.

In September 2024, I entered China University of Petroleum. Many here work hard — studying their major, joining academic competitions, building internship experience — all hoping to land a good job in the end.
